All Alone in the Big City by flutterguy317 All Alone in the Big City by flutterguy317
I've been working on this piece for a while now, on and off in between other vectors, and finally sat down these past two days to finish it! Not really sure where my inspiration for this one came, originally I planned on doing a similar Scootaloo vector, but Applejack really fit with the emotion that I was going for. Here she is, remembering when she was homesick in Manehatten as a filly. I really tried to go all out with this vector, drawing some inspiration for bits and pieces from other fantastically done pieces of art (such as Deirdre, by ~gign-3208).

The vector started out as a sketch (which you can see in my svg file) of just AJ, and I built up the scene around her. I tried to make her the focal point of the image, so the background is very minimalistic (besides the Fluttershy-esque curtains :) ) Between the insane amount of blurs used and the number of paths, it took around 45 minutes to render completely. If you do look in the svg, I would highly recommend using one of the nightly builds of Inkscape 0.49 since the display renderer is a bit faster with handling blurs than the older versions, and I used nested clipping paths (which were only fixed in 0.49).

I would like to give a huge thanks to :iconyanoda:~Yanoda, :iconsilverrainclouds:*SilverRainclouds, :iconmylittlepinkiedash:*MyLittlePinkieDash and :iconkired25:*Kired25 for their awesome help with ironing out the details in the vector (from proportions to proper shading). Seriously, you guys are awesome!

So I really hope you like this piece, and hopefully I will find some inspiration for other artwork with the same style. Feel free to critique it too, I really appreciate feedback since it's my first time working in this kind of artistic depth.

Well I have to say very well done on Applejack. She has all of the right colors. This particlar setting can be relativley related to movies, such as Batman or Spiderman. Most movies have a big city setting and I thnk this could possibly be a start of a interestingly valable story. May I also make a few suggestions? You may want to put a bunch of people in the scene because it is a big city. And you know the usual, cars, shops, restaraunts, coffee stores, and the rest of the sidewalk attractions that most people stop at to look in windows or buy everything their pockets or purses can carry. So just a few things to think about. But other than that, I think you did a fantastic job. Keep up the good work!!!

It took a lot of tweaking and patience :p I used blurs and clipping paths in inkscape, basically converted every stroke to a path, and expanded that path out to form my clipping path for the shading. Feel free to take a look in the svg if you want to, although I must warn you it is very resource intense... Glad you like it :D

dat light/shading ... :iconpukingrainbowsplz:
seriously, brilliant work :>

and technically perfect (i guess, showing it to several VIs before uploading helps with that :la:)
but i'm not really sure about the eye. i mean, that the brow ( or lid or whatever it's called) is bend upwards, because i think the default for sad ponies would be to let it bend down, something like this(this might screw up a shadow on the cheek though(disabled all the stuff because it was killing inkscape *g ) :dummy: )?

anyway, derpy would be so proud :D
